Letter to the Editor

Ever since it appeared that Donald Trump was in danger of losing his bid for reelection, he has promoted, and unambiguously pronounced as true, that the 2020 election would be rigged, and, after he lost, that he himself had absolutely won in a landslide and was the victim of a massive “steal” and “fraud”. It is to the everlasting shame that his supporters and enablers in the Republican Party, from Mitch McConnell on down, embraced this Big Lie, and did everything conceivable to perpetuate and stoke The Lie in the minds of the American public. The Lie is completely analogous to the “Stab-In-The-Back” lie after The Great War, which stated that Germany had not actually lost the War but was stabbed in the back while on the verge of victory. This Lie moldered and festered in the German public’s mind, and 15 years later resulted in accepting the justification for the near extermination of the supposed “backstabbers”, the Jews.

A pious defense has been given for the people who heeded the call by Mr Trump to come to Washington on January 6th. One can only conclude, however, that the people on those buses fully embrace the Big Lie. This defense is as weak and hollow as the boy-man that the riders on the bus have chosen to follow. The thousands of participants nationwide, who have been described as “innocent” of violent intent, decided to flock to the Capitol to bid their “hero” fond goodbye instead of staying home and swallowing the bitter pill of their hero’s defeat and their own gullibility. But their presence in Washington added to the mass of an unruly crowd and enabled a column of armed mercenaries to penetrate the Capitol through their cover. Without that cover there would have only been a small column attacking our Government. They could have been identified, isolated and controlled. As it was, many in the crowd were inflamed and aroused with the mob mentality. They joined in the mayhem, and were themselves swept up as perpetrators and witnesses to, and sometimes victims of, the horrific results.

Blind obedience to the Big Lie culminated in the horrors of World War II. It is imperative that community leaders, either elected or in business, cease to collaborate and perpetuate the falsehoods coming from the mouths of self-serving wannabe dictators like Mr Trump, and open their eyes. If they do not, then when, years in the future, if we actually have a future, they will be rightly held accountable, and their descendants will remember them with shame and sorrow.
