LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed HR8, a comprehensive background check bill to help curb gun violence. The bill now passes to the U.S. Senate as S42.

The support for this bill by 97 percent of Americans should convince Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Pat Toomey that his support is expected if he is truly concerned about the many people who have died due to gun violence - in homicides and accidents, but even more in suicides. If he does not support this bill, and instead votes against it, he is protecting the “right” for unregulated and unmonitored purchase of lethal weapons, and is complicit in condemning thousands of innocents to an untimely death or a life time dealing with a disabling injury.

I implore the Senator, who is facing reelection in 2020, to listen to his conscience and to his constituents, and to lend his support to this bill and vote “yes” for S42.

Far too many of our citizens have died as a result of the greedy policies of the gun manufacturing industry, which aids and abets the NRA. It is time for Senator Toomey and his colleagues to do whatever they can to end this preventable carnage, and his support of S42 is an important first step.
