LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

We’ve had 10 years of the Fitzpatrick Machine. I think it’s time for a change.

What I remember from Brian’s brother Mike is that he pointlessly voted over 50 times to repeal the Affordable Care Act without offering any credible alternative plan for the people who desperately needed health coverage. Mike also started the cowardly tradition of not meeting with constituents in town halls which Brian eagerly continued. Healthcare is a big issue for many of us here in PA District One.

Brian’s opponent, Christina Finello, a mother, gets it and will be an intelligent and compassionate advocate for making progress on the healthcare front. She has a plan and by working with the Democratic majority in the House (and hopefully in the Senate and White House), has a real chance to influence our healthcare system for all Americans.

By contrast Brian’s party, in the middle of a pandemic, is rushing to confirm a conservative Supreme Court nominee who will most likely strike down the ACA and its benefits for millions of Americans. Brian and his Trumpian party, just like his brother Mike, have no credible replacement plan and sadly, some Americans will die because of their callousness.

Of course as a Democrat, I have policy differences with Brian. I don’t expect him to see eye to eye with Democrats all the time. Of course he voted for the tax scam for the rich and his donor corporations while doing nothing for the “Levittown regular guy” like raising the minimum wage. I get it.

But there are two key areas where I know he has totally failed as a Congressman. Brian fails to do his basic Congressional duties. He lacks the courage to have real town halls with all his constituents. I wrote 52 letters to him; he responded to only one. A group of protesters gathered outside his office 86 times. He never once bothered to meet them or send his staff to ask them what they were so concerned about. What makes this dereliction of basic duty all the more galling is his phony carefully crafted image as an “independent moderate who reaches across the aisle.” How can he reach across that aisle if he refuses to meet with non-Republicans and lacks even the courtesy to respond to constituent letters?

The other failing is even more egregious. These are not normal times. This Republican Trump administration has brought outrageous attacks on our democratic institutions, federal agencies, election systems, allies, and most importantly, our morality and ideals. Brian had a chance to stop this lawless president, but he voted (not independently, but with the Republican herd) not to impeach the president. In so many instances of Trumpian lies and incivilities, Brian has stood silently complicit. The most outrageous instance to me is when childless Brian showed no empathy towards the immigrant children suffering at the border. He sided with the camp guards instead, worried that all that extra overtime was stressing them out. Christina, a mother, would have seen this atrocity and acted with compassion to end this blot on the American soul.

Enough of the old Fitzpatrick Machine. It’s time to restore the soul of America so tarnished by Trump and his Republican enablers. There will be much work to do to clean up the Trumpian mess. Christina Finello won’t be blathering about problem solving for campaign advertising imagery. She has the intelligence and compassion to work with the Democratic majority to actually solve these real problems facing America left unsolved because of the party the Fitzpatrick Machine has been complicit in supporting for oh too many years.
