NEWTOWN >> The historic Newtown Theatre is the place to be this summer.

In July and continuing into August, the theatre will offer a series of free movies for kids “Based on the Book.”

For the adults, comedian Vinnie Brand will take the stage on July 14 as part of the theatre’s comedy series.

And the entire family is invited to come inside and cool down with Christmas in July and a special showing of Newtown’s holiday favorite, “It’s a Wonderful Life” on July 24.

Looking ahead to August, the Rat Pack is “Together Again” for a Tribute Show with “Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra.” Get your tickets now for the August 10 showing.

Movie Series for kids

The Newtown Theatre will host a free “Based on the Book” kids’ movie series this summer. Beginning on July 11, the theatre will screen six free kids’ movies on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. Each film will be based on a popular children’s book. At each screening, three lucky audience members will win a free copy of the corresponding book, donated by the Newtown Bookshop.

No reservations or tickets are required for any of the movies. Seating is first come, first served and doors open a half hour before show time. The lineup includes: “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” on July 11, No movie on July 18, “Stuart Little” on July 25, “Paddington” on Aug. 1, “Charlotte’s Web” on Aug. 8 , “Matilda” on Aug. 15 and “Mr. Popper’s Penquins” on Aug. 22

Comedy series features Vinnie Brand

Comedian Vinnie Brand will appear at the Newtown Theatre with special guest Ken Krantz on Saturday, July 14 at 8 p.m. General admission tickets are $20 and are available at This show is for mature audiences only.

Brand opened the Stress Factory Comedy Club in 1991 in New Brunswick, NJ, which has featured headliners like Drew Carey, Chris Rock and others. He has also made television and radio appearances on shows such as Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, Last Comic Standing, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, the Opie and Anthony Show, NickMom Night Out, and Restaurant Stakeout.

Christmas in July brings 'Wonderful Life' to the big screen

Those looking to escape the summer heat can stop by the historic Newtown Theatre for a special Christmas-in-July screening of “It’s a Wonderful Life” on Tuesday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for everyone and free for theatre members.

Movie goers are encouraged to wear their ugly Christmas sweaters or other holiday apparel (the air conditioning will be cranking!) and the theatre will be decked out in holiday decorations. Bring the whole family for a night of Christmas magic…six months early.

Rat Pack Returns with the sound of Martin, Davis and Sinatra

Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra will appear together again at the Newtown Theatre on Friday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for “The Rat Pack: Together Again” tribute show are $25 and are available through

Dean Martin opens the show with a few songs and some humor, introduces Sammy Davis Jr. to kick up the energy, then Frank Sinatra appears to belt out great standards like Come Fly With Me, My Way, and New York New York. Dean chimes in with songs like Everybody Loves Somebody and That’s Amore while Sammy entertains the crowd with Mr. Bojangles and Candy Man among others. The mix of songs, comedy and uncanny portrayals will have the audience reliving the golden era of Las Vegas.
