NEWTOWN BOROUGH >> The Newtown Borough Recreation Board is hosting its annual Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, April 27 at Officer Brian S. Gregg Memorial Park on North Congress Street.
This family friendly and educational event includes music by ECO Man, tree planting, environmental educational stations, nature crafts and yoga. Students from Goodnoe Elementary School, local preschools and community members are invited to attend.
In preparation for the event, first and fifth grade students from Goodnoe Elementary participated in Newtown’s Annual Arbor Day Poster Design Contest. Students were encouraged to design a poster illustrating “the importance of trees in our world and what Arbor Day means to them.” The result of the challenge is a beautiful collection of children’s artwork that will displayed at the park during Newtown’s Arbor Day Celebration.
“The poster contest is an important and hands-on component of our Arbor Day Celebration.”
says Newtown Borough Recreation Board Member Colleen Curtin. “The event is about celebrating the wonders of nature and challenging the children to become actively involved in caring for the
environment. In the process of creating their posters, the children are given the opportunity to
express not only their knowledge and feelings about trees but also their concerns for the
future of our planet. Trees and the environment are a topic that the children understand and value
the importance of based on the considerable number of posters entered into this contest this year. The students at Goodnoe are incredibly talented and the posters are a joy to view.”
Six posters were chosen from the entries judged by a panel that included Newtown Borough Mayor Charles Swartz, landscape designer, Karen Waitkus, and Newtown Borough Chief of Police James Sabath.
The winners are Misa Jerianashvili, Olivia Kern, and Cameron Mccormick (representing 1st grade) and Jane Kalium, Delaney Matthews, and Zach Vigrass (representing 5th grade). They will be acknowledged at the Newtown Arbor Day event on Friday, April 27 at Brian S. Gregg Memorial Park on North Congress Street in Newtown Borough (rain date April 30). The winning posters will be displayed in storefronts throughout the Newtown area and at Goodnoe Elementary School. The event is sponsored by First National Bank of Bucks County, The Newtown Rotary Club and 3D Printing and Copy Center.
