NEWTOWN BOROUGH >> Newtown Arts Company, producers of live theater for the greater Newtown community for more than 35 years, will hold a fundraising event for the Joe McKernan Memorial Scholarship Fund on Tuesday, June 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Isaac Newton’s Restaurant, 18 South State Street, Newtown 18940.
Newtown Borough resident Joseph J. McKernan Jr., past president of Newtown Arts Company, succumbed to pancreatic cancer Feb. 16, 2018. A visionary leader, and inspiring actor and director and a caring friend and mentor to many, McKernan appeared on the Newtown Theatre stage, often with his beloved wife Anne, and cherished sons, Jack and Liam.
A member of Actors Equity Association, McKernan performed in various regional, off-Broadway and community productions across the country.
A passionate advocate of theater education, McKernan taught stage combat in the company’s Classics for Kids productions and Stars of Tomorrow summer theater program, and led Shakespeare workshops.
At Bucks County Playhouse he was a workshop instructor and adjudicator in the student theater festival, taught improvisation and stage combat, and was a director in the New Voices festival.
The Joe McKernan Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of Joe McKernan as part of the Newtown Arts Company’s continued mission of scholarship aid to support high school graduates pursuing higher education in the performing and fine arts.
Since its founding in 1983 Newtown Arts Company has awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to area students.
Isaac Newton’s Restaurant is supporting this event for the Joe McKernan Scholarship Fund by donating a percentage of dine in or take-out sales when patrons present a coupon, available for printing at the Newtown Arts Company website: www.newtownartscompany.com
