Memorial Mile

YARDLEY BOROUGH >> The first ever Memorial Main Street Mile debuts on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 in Yardley Borough.

The chip-timed race steps off at 8 a.m. from Wells Fargo Bank on South Main and concludes at the Yardley Friends Meetinghouse located just north of the Afton and Main Street intersection.

“Like the Sixth Avenue Mile in New York, it’s the concept of a straight shot down a street,” said Jim Balmer, who is helping to organize the race for the Yardley Borough Recreation Board. “My thought was we have a perfect mile right here in Yardley, why not do it here? But the only time we could do it was on Memorial Day because of the road closure for the parade.”

Tying the event into the meaning of the day, the recreation board will donate the proceeds from the one mile race to American Legion Post 317, which organizes the annual Memorial Day Parade with VFW Post 6393.

Awards will be given for First Place Overall Male and Female, plus Gender-Specific Age Groups: 14 & Under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over. (Age group awards will be based on elapsed time, not order of finish.)

Walkers and strollers are welcome in the race, but must finish within 20 minutes to participate in the awards ceremony (walkers are asked to start in the back). There is a 30 minute course limit for the race.

The cost is $30. In person registration will be taken from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 during the Yardley Farmer's Market at Buttonwood Park.  To register online, visit There is no race day registration.

Also, mark your calendars for the 11th Annual Yardley 5K Race, which takes its mark in Buttonwood Park on June 2 at 8:30 a.m.
