FOOTBALL: Neshaminy cruises past Council Rock North

When an undefeated team faces a winless team, it usually doesn’t end well for the winless team – as was the case in Council Rock North’s 35-8 loss to Neshaminy.
Despite Council Rock North (0-6) having an all-area running back in Brandon Cottom, who is headed to Purdue next season, he couldn’t muster much against the stingy Redskins defense. Cottom finished with nine carries for 33 yards and three receptions for 12 yards.
The Redskins threw two interceptions, turned the ball over on downs twice, and punted three times. For most teams, that would be a successful game against the Redskins. But it didn’t amount to much for the Indians.
Instead, the Redskins jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the half and took a 35-0 lead late in the fourth quarter, before North finally got on the board.
“We made enough plays to win it,” said Neshaminy coach Mark Schmidt. “As sloppy as we are, we really believed we could play better. We won 35-8, so I don’t want to sit here and push the panic button, we gotta play better and more consistent.”
Neshaminy quarterback Charlie Marterella was 15-for-26 for 221 passing yards and a 64-yard touchdown pass to Dwight Williams in the first quarter.
The Redskins’ first touchdown came early in the first quarter on a 36-yard touchdown run by Corey Majors, in which he ran to the right and then cut back to the left all the way up the left sideline into the end zone.
Sean Ulmer had 18 carries for 119 rushing yards and a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Anthony Woodroffe and Nate Lasalvia each added a touchdown run in the second half.
“We expect to go out and play our best,” said Schmidt. “And that wasn’t our best. We can play better and we can do better. We have to play better next week [against Council Rock South], or else we’ll be 6-1.”
The Indians totaled 25 yards of offense in the first half and just one first down, which came on a run by Cottom. North tallied 95 total yards of offense and three first downs for the game before the Redskins pulled their starters for the final drive. The Redskins forced seven punts, an interception, a fumble recovery and two turnovers on downs. Continued...
“It’s the game of the year to me,” Marterella said about next week’s contest with Council Rock South. “Homecoming – it’s gonna be packed. We gotta prepare all week, study hard, and we’ll be ready.”
